Hardtack

Hardtack, or Ship's Biscuits, were often consumed by sailors in the 17th and 18th centuries; made out of just flour and water, hardtack was ideal for long voyages due to its inability to spoil, and became an essential ration for sailors and soldiers alike. Hardtack was also known for one other thing, its miraculous  ability to become infested with maggots, weevils and other insects, which is where our story takes us today.
